Dollars with Sense is a financial literacy program for grade 7 students, through which students learn to value the importance of goal setting, planning and money management in pursuit of their futures. The program consists of five central lessons: - The Story of Me
Students reflect on their life and lifestyle both in the past, present and future. Through discussion,students have the opporunity to discover the importance of planning and goal setting.
- It’s All About Money
Students explore money as a means of exchange. They also see there are advantages and disadvantages to the many ways in which they can pay bills and access their money.
- Looking After Your Money
Students learn the basic features and characteristics of creating a budget. This lesson also introduces students to the concept of compound interest.
- Making Your Money Work
Students learn about a variety of investment terms and products. Students discover the advantages and disadvantages of various investments.
- Time to Invest
Students have an opportunity to put into practice their investment knowledge during an investment simulation.
The Volunteer Role:
Working in partnership with a classroom teacher, the Dollars with Sense consultant shares his/her experience and expertise with the students while delivering the program through materials provided by Junior Achievement. The typical role of the volunteer consultant is as follows:
- Facilitate 6 weekly lessons (one hour each in duration) OR 2 1/2 day sessions (three hours in duration).
- Bring practical business expertise to the program to reinforce the theories being taught.
- Help the students to understand objectives, create strategies, think critically, and make interesting presentations.
- Follow the guidelines provided by Junior Achievement in order to meet the program objectives.

Volunteer Commitment:
